September 13 – October. 18, 2015

“A Disciple’s Path” guides individuals to take the next step in discipleship and become dynamic, engaged followers of Jesus Christ. The study combines a Wesleyan understanding of our growth in God’s love and grace with the time-tested practices of spiritual discipline expressed in the membership vows to uphold the church with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Participants will develop spiritual practices, discover their unique gifts, and become engaged in ministry that brings transformation in their own lives, the lives of others, and the world.

September 27: The Priority of Presence ~Acts 2:42-47

Each of us has an instinctual desire to belong. Yet why do we spend so much time with our earbuds in, staring at our phones? Maybe that’s a symptom of something larger afoot. How can we better connect with one another and truly be present to one another?

Why the Wesleys, and others, came to be called Methodists

disciples-path

Those who went to the kickoff for A Disciple’s Path heard part of this story from Pastor Dan.

For those who missed it or need a refresher, here you go…

Holy Club. Bible Moths. Methodists.

These are just a few of the names people called Charles and John Wesley and those gathered around them before anyone called their group a movement, let alone a church. Charles and John Wesley are considered founders of the Methodist movement that led to what is now The United Methodist Church.

It all began around 1728 with a few men at Oxford University, where Charles was finishing his studies. Charles Wesley had not always been very good at focusing on his studies or his faith. His first year at school was full of diversions like playing cards and enjoying music, theater and dancing. Nevertheless, by his final year, he was ready to devote himself to a more focused method of engaging study and faith.

Charles knew he could not do this on his own. He gathered with others in a small group, a practice common at Oxford in those days.

Today at Pender UMC ~ September 20, 2015

disciples-path

Please join us for a wonderful time of worship this Sunday, September 20th, at our 8:15, 9:30 & 11:00 worship services.

Both Pastor Kenny & Pastor Dan will continue their sermon series based on our church-wide study, “A Disciple’s Path” and will be preaching on “The Path of Biblical Prayer” (Matthew 6:5-15)

Building intimacy in a human relationship requires careful attention and intentional discipline. In the same way, prayer is about cultivating a relationship with God and that also takes time. How do we do that?
