About MaryO

Cushing's and kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma) patient, founder, owner and webmaster of Cushing's Help and Support, web designer, piano teacher and mom. I am a Cushing's patient who has dealt with Cushing's symptoms since 1983 (or earlier) and the aftereffects of pituitary surgery since 1987. Because I had very little support for my symptoms, diagnosis and surgery, I decided to try to make things a little better for other patients and started a support site called Cushing's Help and Support in 2000. The site has grown to astronomical numbers. This disease isn't as rare as doctors have told us! In 2006, I was also diagnosed with kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma). My left kidney and adrenal gland were removed. Having an adrenal gland removed complicates my post-Cushing's symptoms. I am not planning to have any more rare and unusual diseases. My entire bio to date can be found here: http://www.cushings-help.com/maryos_story.htm But, enough of that - it's not always about Cushing's, or even Cancer. This one is about Life!

Slideshow of photos from The Chris Atwood Foundation 10th Anniversary Bash on May 6, 2023.

This was a riff on our usual “Hope in Motion” spring FUNdraising event, but this year was our 10th anniversary so we highlighted that.

We had activities for all ages including:

  • Smokin’ Willy’s on-site grilling
  • Kids games
  • Music
  • Petting zoo
  • Lawn games
  • Wellness activities
  • Raffle prizes
  • Birthday cake

The CAF supports all paths to recovery from substance use disorder, and one of the foundational philosophies of harm reduction is to celebrate “any positive change” that improves health and wellbeing.

In that spirit, we’re inviting you to join us in supporting The CAF’s mission through any movement you choose! Walk, run, hike, bike, swim, practice yoga, dance, jump rope – however you choose to move your body to support recovery and honor our loved ones we have lost to substance use disorder.

We encourage you to create fundraising teams, post pictures, and get the kids, your friends, and neighbors involved to help us raise much needed funds that will allow The CAF to continue its critical mission of saving lives and supporting recovery.

“Advent Medley” from Spring Concert 2023

On May 13, 2023 Brian Stevenson, Pender Music Director, produced our annual Spring Concert.

This wonderful evening included music by Heidi Jacobs, pianist, the DC Harp Ensemble, the Pender Joy Ringers Handbell ensemble, Sean Wittmer, violinist, and an Irish music session.

Heidi had just been hired as Pender’s pianist on May 11, 2023 and she agreed to play her audition piece, “Advent Medley” for our concert.

Donations received went to the REACH International foundation in support of two Sri Lankan orphanages.
