Chrismon Tree

chrismon2

Chrismon Tree. Did you know that Pender has a Chrismon Tree in the sanctuary at Christmas time?

Do you know what do those symbols mean on the tree? Who made them and why?

Ornaments made from Christian symbols (or Chrismons, a contraction for ‘Christ monograms’) were first developed by Frances Spencer and the women of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, VA. Many churches display a Chrismon tree during the Advent and Christmas season decorated with handmade ornaments.

In the video below, Chuck talks about the Chrismon Tree.

Sunday, December 7, 2014 Will be the Second Sunday of Advent

The second Sunday in Advent

This Sunday, December 7, marks the Second Sunday in Advent. Have you made an Advent wreath for your home or church?

The wreaths often consist of a circle of evergreens with four purple candles and a white one in the center, but it’s fun to  be creative with the use of natural materials.

Advent 2014

advent-feature

Advent begins this year on November 30.

During Advent, we prepare for, and anticipate, the coming of Christ. We remember the longing of Jews for a Messiah and our own longing for, and need of, forgiveness, salvation and a new beginning.

Even as we look back and celebrate the birth of Jesus in a humble stable in Bethlehem, we also look forward anticipating the second coming of Christ as the fulfillment of all that was promised by his first coming.

The season of Advent, which comes comes from the Latin word adventus meaning  “coming” or “visit,” begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve.

Advent Wreath – November 30, 2014

Advent

Sunday, November 30, 2014  is the First Sunday in Advent.

The first Candle of the Advent Wreath is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, on November 30 this year. It is called the Prophecy Candle and reminds us that Jesus’ coming was prophesied hundreds of years before He was born. The candle’s purple color represents Christ’s royalty as the King of Kings.

Suggested Bible Reading: Luke 1:26-38

Chuck Knows Church — ADVENT WREATH. Four candles in a circle with a big one in the middle? Yep, take a moment and learn the basics about the advent wreath. And why is the pink candle…pink?
