The first Candle of the Advent Wreath is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, on December 3 this year. It is called the Prophecy Candle and reminds us that Jesus’ coming was prophesied hundreds of years before He was born. The candle’s purple color represents Christ’s royalty as the King of Kings.

Sunday, December 7, 2014 Will be the Second Sunday of Advent

The second Sunday in Advent

This Sunday, December 7, marks the Second Sunday in Advent. Have you made an Advent wreath for your home or church?

The wreaths often consist of a circle of evergreens with four purple candles and a white one in the center, but it’s fun to  be creative with the use of natural materials.

The First Sunday of Advent ~ December 1

Advent

Sunday, December 1, is the First Sunday in Advent.

The sermon for December 1 – Sing Out The Joy – Isaiah 42:10-17

Advent is a time to take stock of the fact that Joy comes to the world because the Lord has come. Isaiah foretold that when the Messiah came He would give us JOY in the midst of the harshness of life. I wonder can we find the joy in the midst of the events in our economy, in a marriage gone sour, in a nation that is conflicted? Let’s discover the joy the Lord will bring.

The Advent Wreath

The first Candle is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, shortly after November 30. It is called the Prophecy Candle and reminds us that Jesus’ coming was prophesied hundreds of years before He was born. The candle’s purple color represents Christ’s royalty as the King of Kings.

Suggested Bible Reading: Luke 1:26-38

The Fourth Sunday of Advent – December 23, 2012

The Fourth Sunday of Advent

The fourth candle, lit on the fourth Sunday of advent, is the Angel’s candle.

As we light this flame, we are reminded of the heavenly hosts that proclaimed Christ’s arrival with “Behold, I bring unto you good tiding of great joy!”

The Angel candle is also purple, reminding us that it was a King’s birth the angels were announcing.

Suggested Bible Reading: Ezekiel 34:23, Luke 2:15-20 and John
10:11
