Confirmation is a time to learn about your church, the entire church community and what it means to be a faithful Christian. You will also understand the privileges and responsibilities of church membership.
Confirmation is open to 7th graders and up. Confirmation gives the student a chance to make their own decision to follow Jesus Christ, to be baptized and to join your local church.
The period of study in confirmation classes is a time for the student to learn and know the tenets of the church they are in so that they can make an informed decision about joining the church as an adult.
Confirmation Sunday is May 31, 2015.
Did you attend Confirmation classes when you were young? And do you know why we confirm young people in the church? Chuck tries to confirm his reservation and talk about Confirmation.
Christianity, confirmation is seen as the sealing of the covenant made in Holy Baptism. On this second part of a two-part episode, Chuck gives his own testimony as to why he is a Christian.
Join us this Sunday at our 8:15, 9:30 and 11:00 Services.
Rev. Suzanne Spencer, our Pre-Missions Conference Guest Speaker, will be preaching on “Are You Bearing Fruit?” (John 15:1-8)
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
This Sunday, April 12th, Suzanne Schmid Spencer will be our special pre-conference speaker. At a time in life when she was looking forward to retiring from her career as a research gerontologist and assisted living administrator, Suzanne was surprised to hear a call to pastoral ministry. She served as Director of Congregational Care at Woodlake UMC near her home in Midlothian VA, as Director of Christian Education at Fairview UMC in Danville VA, and as pastor of New Hope Charge on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. She found a love of mission as a girl under the discipleship of Miss Jean Craig, who served as a Virginia Conference missionary to China and Korea before returning to Richmond to serve local churches. Suzanne has served on a short-term mission team to Mexico and on six Pender teams to Peru. Now retired, she joins her husband, Dr. John Spencer in opening their home in the Valley as a place of rest and renewal for pastors and missionaries.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the most important week of the church year. At the other end of Holy Week is Easter, the most important day of the church year.
For Christians, this is the big event! And it’s all about the mystery that somehow Jesus Christ makes us one with God.
The days leading up to Easter often have an understandably somber feel to them, particularly as we contemplate Jesus’ arrest, trial, and execution. It’s easy to forget that the week begins with a joyful event: the Triumphal Entry!
Today is Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, we commemorate Jesus’ celebrated entry into Jerusalem just a few days before his arrest, trial, and crucifixion.
The “palm” in Palm Sunday refers to the palm branches waved by the adoring Jerusalem crowds who welcomed Jesus and proclaimed him King. The event is commonly referred to as the Triumphal Entry. Here’s the account from Matthew 21:1-11:
As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”
This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
“Say to Daughter Zion,
‘See, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
“Hosanna to the Son of David!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, “Who is this?”
The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
