Sermon Series ~ Faith Around the Beltway

Are you tired of going nowhere in life?  Do you feel frustrated by the end- less brake lights, leaving you “stuck” and backed up?  Then join us as we explore ways to avoid the delays and move intentionally into God’s expressway.  Get going by knowing and showing there is a better way!

Feb. 10th Sermon:  Road Rage – Anger

Road rage can be found anywhere on the beltway.  What can we do to make sure we are not a part of it?  How do we curb our anger?  Lets talk this Sunday!

This Sunday, February 10th, is Scouting Ministries Sunday!

Is God Calling You?!

MISSION TRIP TO BRAZIL

We are in the first steps of planning a trip to work with Pender Missionaries,
Charles and Becky Jackson, in the outlying areas of Rio.  The Jacksons work with an interdenominational Church which they helped start 10 years ago, along with several satellite churches.
This is a relational ministry with the main focus being on helping to feed the poor, visiting homes, training leaders and outreach.
The dates of the trip are to be determined (most likely the end of June).  If interested in being part of this awesome ministry adventure, please contact Sarah Hocker .

Race to Nowhere ~ Feb. 8th at 7:00 pm

Turning Point Youth Ministrypresents:  Race to NowhereFeaturing the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids.  Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

All parents and youth are invited to a showing of this movie on February 8th at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall.  A small panel discussion will immediately follow the film.

Change of Date for Sing ‘n Celebrate ~ February 10th

           SING ‘N CELEBRATE WORSHIP SERVICE

         FEBRUARY 10TH AT 7:00 PM

 HANDS OF LOVE

As we approach the beginning of Lent, and continue to focus on our relationship with God, this SNC will provide for us an opportunity to more fully realize that the depth of our awareness of our Father God’s love for us is key in our growth in the Christian life.  The author, David Eckman, shares that “the focus Person for what is done in the “love relationship” is God, and Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit sustain that relationship.”

Common Ground Worship Service Volunteer Brunch ~ Feb. 17th
On Sunday, February 17th, there will be a meeting for all the wonderful

volunCommon Ground Logoteers and potential servants for our 9:30 Common Ground worship service. If you are currently a volunteer in any capacity, or are considering joining our great group, please plan to attend this brunch, which will start at 10:30 am.

So for all praise team members, greeters, readers, prayers and the list goes on, please mark this date.  It is our hope to bring everyone together, discuss plans for 2013 and celebrate our work here at Pender UMC.

Soup for the Soul Thursday Dinners beginning Feb. 21st
Lent 7Beginning on Thursday February 21st, we will be meeting for dinner and discussion during the period of Lent.  It was a huge success last year and we hope to continue this time of fellowship and learning, in addition to great food, for the duration of Lent.  We will be discussing the sermon from the week prior, as a table group, while enjoying home cooked dinners.

Please plan to attend — the program will begin at 6:00 and be finished by 7:00 so that all may attend other evening events as needed.

Wanted:  A Few Good Women and Men
Do our military service members and veterans hold a special place in your heart?

Pender UMC is looking to expand our military ministry in 2013.  Are you good at organizing a donation drive? Enjoy sending cards and notes of encouragement? Willing to organize and host a sporting event to benefit our wounded warriors? Crafty and able to knit, crochet, or sew items to donate? Want to support military families in some way? Looking to help out in a small or large way but simply don’t know how to get started? Please stop by the Military Ministry table near the coat racks anytime in February (between and after Sunday church services).  You’ll be able to sign up, get information, share ideas, and ask questions.  Or you can simply email Kay Creel with your area of interest and questions.

God bless those who are serving and have served our country.

Smiles on Wheels
We have wonderful news to share – the Pender UMC Visitation Ministry (aka Smiles on Wheels) is up and running!  It is a blessing to have their services and we are looking to you, our church community, to let us know of folks who might enjoy a visit from our volunteers.  The group of women have been trained by Chris Hanak, and have been busy since the fall bringing smiles and Christ to those who are not able to come to church on a regular basis.

Please contact Joyce Munt in our Church Office with any names or questions you might have concerning visitation and fellowship by this group.

Epiphany Prison Ministry

Don’t forget! In February, a team from Northern Virginia will again go behind the walls at Culpeper Juvenile Correctional Center for an “Epiphany” weekend, a three-day weekend spent showing God’s infinite love and grace to young people in prison. We talk about what Christ has done for us. We talk about what He can do for them, if they let Him inside – past their walls and their rough exteriors, past their fear and their shame, and past their pride and their arrogance – deep inside their hearts.

How can you help? Prayer. Take 30 minutes out of your day to pray for the ministry team and these young men. Sign up here.

Child Protection Policy

CPPCHILD PROTECTION POLICY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FORMS FOR 2013 need to be signed by all those working with children.

Fellowship Time Update
As we mentioned previously, our Fellowship Committee has been looking at ways to enhance our Fellowship Time, without making it a burden as far as provisions and clean up.

We are excited about some changes that will take place in early February and will hopefully make the experience better for all concerned. We hope you will plan to visit and spend time with our church family, in between whichever worship service you prefer.

If you are interested in enhancing our fellowship time, you will have the opportunity this Sunday to sign up on the Connection Card to volunteer as a family to bring in extra goodies to share.
