Why the Wesleys, and others, came to be called Methodists

disciples-path

Those who went to the kickoff for A Disciple’s Path heard part of this story from Pastor Dan.

For those who missed it or need a refresher, here you go…

Holy Club. Bible Moths. Methodists.

These are just a few of the names people called Charles and John Wesley and those gathered around them before anyone called their group a movement, let alone a church. Charles and John Wesley are considered founders of the Methodist movement that led to what is now The United Methodist Church.

It all began around 1728 with a few men at Oxford University, where Charles was finishing his studies. Charles Wesley had not always been very good at focusing on his studies or his faith. His first year at school was full of diversions like playing cards and enjoying music, theater and dancing. Nevertheless, by his final year, he was ready to devote himself to a more focused method of engaging study and faith.

Charles knew he could not do this on his own. He gathered with others in a small group, a practice common at Oxford in those days.

John Wesley’s diet, exercise tips promote health

A rerun from last year but good to revisit as we follow A Disciple’s Path:

Among John Wesley’s advice:

Eat a light supper at least two or three hours before bed. Oprah could not have said it better.

Wesley’s counsel to scholars also may seem relevant to couch potatoes, computer addicts and people who work in cubicles.

“Those who read or write much, should learn to do it standing; otherwise it will impair their health,” Wesley said.

Drink lots of water; it’s the healthiest of all drinks.

Other Wesley diet and exercise tips include:

  • Avoid coffee and tea; they elevate anxiety.
  • Exercise, preferably walking, is necessary for good health.
  • Cold baths promote circulation.
  • Exercise on an empty stomach.
  • Go to bed at 9 p.m. and rise at 4 a.m. or 5 a.m.

    Youth in Mission

You won’t want to miss hearing from two of our Pender youth who have already discovered the joy of serving — Kayla Moxley in Philippi and Katelyn Barone in Peru for the first time. When God sends us to serve, God also sends us blessings. Since we are in the hiring process for our new band, they won’t be with us for this SNC. However, Peter and Rachel Kotiah have graciously agreed to provide our praise music for this time of worship.
