A Journey to Bethlehem, December 5, 2021

For children and their families…
Kids will have the opportunity to walk along with Joseph and Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem. They’ll complete a census with the Roman guard before they meet Mary and Elizabeth to grind some grain and sew a quilt square, help Joseph in his carpentry shop, and visit the manger scene to take a photo with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, and the animals in the stable.
Children can also create their own ornament and draw a picture to remember the Nativity scene. This is an excellent way for preschool and elementary age children to develop memories of Christmas. Moms and Dads will want to tag along, rather than dropping kids off, as children walk through the journey at their own pace.

Today’s Bible Verse: John 1:1-2, 14

John1-1-2
[ The Word Became Flesh ] In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. ~John 1:1-2, 14

Advent Wreath — Chuck Knows Church

Advent

Sunday, November 28,  is the First Sunday in Advent.   I’m skipping a couple of the Chuck Knows Church episodes because this one is so timely.  We’ll get back to the others after Christmas.

The first Candle is lit on the first Sunday of Advent. It is called the Prophecy Candle and reminds us that Jesus’ coming was prophesied hundreds of years before He was born. The candle’s purple color represents Christ’s royalty as the King of Kings.

Suggested Bible Reading: Luke 1:26-38

Chuck Knows Church — ADVENT WREATH. Four candles in a circle with a big one in the middle? Yep, take a moment and learn the basics about the advent wreath. And why is the pink candle…pink?

Pender Hill School is collecting toys for the Santa’s Ride program again this year. We are excited to work with the Fairfax County Police Motor Squad to collect new toys and books for children in local hospitals.

Items can be donated in the marked bins in the Church Lobby and the downstairs Preschool hallway until Sunday, December 12.

Please contact Ann Hines or Sarah Hocker with any questions.

Be a Part of our Jail Ministry with JDC!

prison-feature

Join us in worship with the young men and women at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center.

You may feel like your individual participation doesn’t matter, but it does! Over and over again, the staff tells us how we make a difference in the young men’s and women’s lives and the lives of the staff!

Currently, We can only bring three people, so it is by invitation only. It is for the church to keep JDC in prayer.

Pender ministers to the youth lodged in the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) through a program of Sunday afternoon worship.  The JDC serves young men and women, ages 10 – 17.  These young men and women are held before trial, and in some cases, after trail in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.  The JDC also holds juveniles while awaiting transportation to the State Department of Juvenile Justice or other Placements.  Their offenses run the gambit from delinquent offenders with minor criminal records to youth charged with major crimes.

Pender members join with these youth in worship including contemporary Christian music, a message, and prayer.  Every fourth Sunday, we meet at the Center at 1 PM and are finished by 2:30 PM.
