Chrismon Tree

chrismon2

Chrismon Tree. Did you know that Pender has a Chrismon Tree in the sanctuary at Christmas time?

Do you know what do those symbols mean on the tree? Who made them and why?

Ornaments made from Christian symbols (or Chrismons, a contraction for ‘Christ monograms’) were first developed by Frances Spencer and the women of the Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, VA. Many churches display a Chrismon tree during the Advent and Christmas season decorated with handmade ornaments.

In the video below, Chuck talks about the Chrismon Tree.

Sunday, December 7, 2014 Will be the Second Sunday of Advent

The second Sunday in Advent

This Sunday, December 7, marks the Second Sunday in Advent. Have you made an Advent wreath for your home or church?

The wreaths often consist of a circle of evergreens with four purple candles and a white one in the center, but it’s fun to  be creative with the use of natural materials.

Learn more in the article for the Advent Wreath Lighting Devotion 2012. http://www.umcmission.org/Learn-About-Us/News-and-Stories/2012/October-/Advent-2012

Today at Pender ~ The First Sunday of Advent ~ November 30, 2014

celebrate-jesus-feature

Please join us today, the first Sunday in Advent, in worship at the 8:15, 9:30 and 11:00 Services.

November 30
Sermon: It’s Not Your Birthday
Scripture: Matthew 1:18-25

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Advent 2014

advent-feature

Advent begins this year on November 30.

During Advent, we prepare for, and anticipate, the coming of Christ. We remember the longing of Jews for a Messiah and our own longing for, and need of, forgiveness, salvation and a new beginning.

Even as we look back and celebrate the birth of Jesus in a humble stable in Bethlehem, we also look forward anticipating the second coming of Christ as the fulfillment of all that was promised by his first coming.

The season of Advent, which comes comes from the Latin word adventus meaning  “coming” or “visit,” begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve.
