Bible Gateway Lent Devotionals Are Here

The Holy Bible

From my email:

Lent is coming! The season of Lent–the approximately six weeks leading up to Easter Sunday–begins on Wednesday, February 13. And that means….

Bible Gateway Lent Devotionals Are Here

Christians around the world observe Lent in a wide variety of ways. Some commit to daily Scripture meditation, devotional reading, or regular prayer. One common practice during Lent is to “give up” something you take for granted as an act of self-denial–and as a way to center our priorities around Jesus Christ and nothing else.

However you choose to observe Lent this year, we’ve got several email devotionals designed to help you stay focused on Jesus during the long journey to Easter:

  • Lent Devotions: An eclectic mix of Scripture readings, prayers, and reflections to help you ground your thoughts on Jesus Christ during the Easter season.
  • The Story of Jesus: Read through the entire life of Jesus Christ, beginning with his birth and culminating in his death and glorious resurrection.
  • Readings for Lent and Easter from The Voice: Daily Bible readings to help root you in Scripture throughout Lent, drawn from The Voice Bible translation.

Sign for up for these devotionals on our Newsletters page. All three begin on Wednesday, February 13.

Each of these devotionals takes a slightly different reflective approach to the Lent experience. Individually or collectively, they’ll give you something to think, pray, and reflect on as Easter approaches!

However you observe this season, we wish you a blessed, reflective Lent. It may seem far away now, but the joyous hope of Easter is coming!

Sincerely,
The Bible Gateway Team

Smiles on Wheels

Visitation Ministry

We have wonderful news to share – the Pender UMC Visitation Ministry (aka Smiles on Wheels) is up and running! It is a blessing to have their services and we are looking to you, our church community, to let us know of folks who might enjoy a visit from our volunteers. The group of women have been trained by Chris Hanak, and have been busy since the fall bringing smiles and Christ to those who are not able to come to church on a regular basis.

Please contact Joyce Munt in our Church Office with any names or questions you might have concerning visitation and fellowship by this group.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday Service and Spaghetti Dinner

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. It derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a sign of mourning and repentance to God.

Ash Wednesday Spaghetti Dinner
Hosted by Fairfax American Heritage Girls Troop VA 1907
February 13th at 6 pm

Proceeds from donations to the dinner will help support the needy in our community. The dinner includes a choice of white or wheat pasta and meat or vegetarian sauce, garlic bread, salad and dessert. A gluten-free option is also available.

Reservations requested to help with planning. Call 703-815-6197 or email the troop by clicking here by Feb. 10 to reserve your spot.

Our Ash Wednesday service will follow the dinner at 7:30 pm
Everyone is welcome to attend!

And Chuck Knows Church says…

Ever seen a little smudge mark on someone’s forehead as they walk out of church? That’s a sign of the cross and it means it’s Ash Wednesday during Lent. Chuck tells you about this important worship service:

Lent

Lent

Lent is a time to prepare for Easter.  United Methodists begin Lent on Ash Wednesday and continue celebrating Lent until Easter. We view Lent as a way to slow down and focus on God, so many Methodists will give up foods or activities during this time. The purpose of giving something up is to find more time to focus on God.

Here’s what Chuck Knows Church has to say about Lent.

Ever heard, “I’m giving up sweets for Lent”? Why does Lent make people want to give up something? And how do you calculate the 40 days of Lent?
