Lent Quiz: How did the early church observe Lent?

stained-glass

In addition to being a time to remember the mercy and forgiveness of Jesus, the early church used Lent to prepare converts for baptism, and to offer opportunities for those who had been separated from the church to be reconciled.

Today Lent remains an ideal time to remember our baptism and to reconcile relationships with those we may have harmed. All of this signifies to us our sinfulness and the sacrifice of Jesus which makes our forgiveness possible.

What does the term ‘Lent,’ which comes from ‘lencten,’ mean?

charles-wesley-emory-incorrect-revised

Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.” The root words mean “long days,” and this combination probably refers to the increasing daylight at this time of year. Lent’s 40 days represent Jesus’ time in the wilderness, enduring temptation and preparing to begin his ministry.

Just In Time For Christmas

From RevKev, Pender’s Former Associate Pastor – “As it was, so it is, Christmas about Jesus. We are all distracted by the glitz and festivities, but let us hear the sound of Angels and the call to worship our Newborn King.

Just in time for Christmas, a gift from God to you: A baby in a manger who would love us through and through..”

Sunday December 1, 2019 Is the Beginning of Advent

Advent

Sunday, December 1, 2019  is the First Sunday in Advent.

The first Candle of the Advent Wreath is lit on the first Sunday of Advent, on December 1 this year. It is called the Prophecy Candle and reminds us that Jesus’ coming was prophesied hundreds of years before He was born. The candle’s purple color represents Christ’s royalty as the King of Kings.

Suggested Bible Reading: Luke 1:26-38

Chuck Knows Church — ADVENT WREATH. Four candles in a circle with a big one in the middle? Yep, take a moment and learn the basics about the advent wreath. And why is the pink candle…pink?

ONE Table Sunday, September 1 at 10am

One Table

Pender will unite together in one worship service in the Sanctuary at 10am on the first Sundays of the month from now on.

We will continue to have all 3 services — 8:15am, 9:30am, 11am — throughout the other weeks of each summer month.

Rev. Lloyd Rollins will preach on What’s In The Story? based on scriptures Jeremiah 29:11 and Matthew 7:7.

The story aspect of the Gospel. Jesus chose to use stories as the primary tool for teaching – the Parables. We will look at our own story to discover whether our story is within the Gospel characteristics or something else. Could be a reason to come and see.
